“95 % Cyber Security breaches are caused by Human Mistakes” – IBM, 2022

Maybe, we need to start asking the wrongawkwardinconvenientunpopularmessy questions?

Let’s talk about cybersecurity! It’s super important in this day and age, especially since our lives revolve around technology.
But, it’s not just about fancy software and gadgets.

We, as human beings, need to step up and take responsibility for our own cyber safety.
Despite the considerable growth in the field of cybersecurity in recent years, organizations worldwide continue to face an alarming increase in the number of cyber attacks.
One key contributing factor is that, while organizations invest significant resources into fortifying their technological defenses, they frequently fail to address the human component of security.
Staff may use software that is outdated or not secure

Cyber criminals are realising that third-party software may offer the best route to breach a network perimeter.

Staff may install applications without the knowledge or approval of your IT department.

They may either use a weak password or store it incorrectly

How seriously do the staff in your organisation take password security?

Unless your staff are trained in the importance of creating strong passwords, as well as appropriate password storage strategies, you shouldn’t be surprised if hackers crack passwords and gain access to your systems.

Humans can carelessly handle data

Common examples of carelessness include:

  • Sending personal information to the wrong recipient via email (45% of human error breaches),
  • Unintended release or publication of personal information (16%), and
  • Failure to use the ‘blind carbon copy’ (BCC) function when sending group emails.

Cyber criminals understand that the weakest link in many organisations is human error within information security controls.

Staff that have low levels of security awareness are more easily deceived into clicking a link or opening an attachment in a malicious email. That one simple act can result in the installation of malware that opens an organisation up to attack.

We Need to Prioritize Human Focused Cyber Security

Human-focused cyber security is all about understanding how people interact with technology and designing systems that take into account human behavior. It’s not just about having the latest and greatest technology, but also about educating and empowering individuals to make smart decisions when it comes to their online activities. By advocating for human-focused cyber security, you can help promote a safer and more secure digital world for everyone.
